I’m usually more of a fan of trying to disconnect when I’m outdoors. I’m not an Apple iphone, ipod or crackberry owner. The more tech-savvy of you would seriously laugh if you saw my old school flip phone. I did however find this list of camping and hiking apps kind of interesting and maybe even useful. Feel free to comment if you’ve tried any of these as I’m sure other readers would appreciate it.
And speaking of ipod, we have a couple of accessories, like an ipod solar charger to keep your ipod charged by the sun, you might want for your next excursion!
Make it a great day!

As I type this I look outside and see nothing but a steady snowfall. It’s beautiful and cold in Indianapolis on this fine Winter’s day. But I’m not thinking about snow - hell no - though I might go out and walk through the fresh stuff a little later.
Right now I’ve got camping on the brain! Spring is the time to start hittin’ it for camping. Yeah we’ve got you covered for gear. If you’re new to camping, you might find this article useful, entitled simply “Top 10 Camping Tips,” and they’re all great. Might seem obvious, but even the experienced camper might want to review them from time to time.
Enjoy Winter in the meantime and we’ll see you outdoors!

I decided to go for a winter walk today. It was snowy and a nice crisp 35 degrees or so with just a little breeze. I was only out for about a half hour. In that short time I didn’t so much experience “cotton kills” as I realized it’s possible.
I was toasty warm in layers except for my legs, covered only by 100% cotton cargo pants, which did not fare well in 35 degree, damp, snowy weather and wind. In short, cotton absorbs moisture, doesn’t block wind and as a result allows your precious body heat to escape. The bottom cuffs of my pants were iced over by the time I got home and that was just after a short walk. We’re not talking hike - just a walk on a flat, paved trail.
Bottom line: When it’s cold outdoors - layer up and forget the cotton! And once you do that, enjoy your time in the Outdoors!
If you’re needing warm weather gear, we have a nice selection of coats and gloves. Oh, and don’t forget your hat! If you’re looking to browse, feel free to check out our Clothing/Apparel Department!

Happy Holidays!

Went on a fun hike Friday on the Big Tesque Trail 152 in Hyde State Memorial Park in Santa Fe, New Mexico. It’s a beautiful park. Elevation… and snow… provided for some interesting experiences. Some pics start here on the facebook page for RegularJoeOutdoors.
Oh and we caught a little snip of video I call my friend Elaine’s “slide” from Grace. No Elaine’s were harmed during the filming of this unscripted video. Feel free to become a Fan if you’re on Facebook!
Enjoy and Happy Holidays!

Hello and welcome to the Holiday Season! I’ve been negligent in keeping up with the blog since I hit the road a week or so before Thanksgiving. For updates and pictures since then, check out the Facebook Fan page.
I’ve been to Pagos Springs, CO and am presently in Santa Fe, NM to promote the site and see some sights! Having lots of fun and just want to pass along one recommendation when you’re out West and that is Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate! I’m from the Midwest and feel like I can’t drink enough water while I’m out here. The altitude got me a bit when I first arrived but the one major recurring challenge has been to keep drinking good clean fluids, especially water.
HYDRATE (to the 3rd Power!) is your public service message du jour courtesy of RegularJoeOutdoors.com! Need some water bottles or a water purifier? We got you covered!
Hope you’ve having a great and safe Holiday Season with you and yours. Get outside for a walk, hike or whatever if you get a chance!

RegularJoe... Outdoors!
WOW! We got some really warm late summer weather plus a LOT of sun this weekend in Indy. Wow it was nice. Let me say that again: wow! I took a hike around and snapped a few pics of the last of the colors before Old Man Winter arrives. I hear the footsteps… Do you hear the footsteps?! Or is that the voices? Dunno…
The voices (I’m sure it was the voices because they identified themselves by saying “Hi, voices here”) told me to share the pics so I’ve posted a couple of them (including this one) on the facebook page. Didn’t know about the facebook page eh? Well tell your friends you can find the fanpage at http://facebook.com/RegularJoeOutdoors.com and also note you do not have to have an account to see the page or these pics!
And also check out twitter: http://twitter.com/RJOutdoors
More to come, including some other local pics of Indy (that’s Indianapolis for the un-initiated, ya know, like Indy500) plus a recent trip to Michigan when Autumn was in full bloom. Full bloom - is that the right term? Have to ask the voices later…
Anyway enjoy and have a great day!
RegularJoe
ps - feel free to share this post and also to provide suggestions you might have about blog topics you’d like to see! Love to hear from you!

This is a great article from backpacker.com reminding us that we need vitamin D and a great way to get that is via sunlight. Yeah sunscreen is important to use to help manage exposure, but let’s keep in mind the main point: GET OUTDOORS! And take your kids with you for a great outdoors experience. In today’s world of gaming systems, online gaming, sitting still txt-ing for hours on end and whatnot, sometimes we forget to get outside to refresh and re-energize ourselves. No it doesn’t have to be some big excursion - just go out for a walk if nothing else!
What? Need some gear to go with that experience, well we’ve got you covered!

RegularJoe might be silly, and enjoy silly, but I’m not making this up. Talk about heading outdoors - try out of the atmosphere!! The founder of the famous body bending musical entertainment experience known as Cirque du Soleil, returned from space today!
Speaking of raising awareness of clean drinking water, make sure to check out my last post about water purifiers. Whether you’re on the trail, or in a location where the drinking water is questionable, having access to reliably safe drinking water is critical!
Just how important is water in your priority list? What the heck is a priority list anyway? More on that in an upcoming post. Meanwhile, congrats Mr. Laliberte on your journey and safe return.
Enjoy!

Water purification is a must when you’re on an outdoor excursion of just about any length. Having a portable water purifier is also handy to have an a bug out bag (BOB) if you prepare along those lines, or even in an emergency / disaster home preparedness kit.
Enter the Katadyn Pocket Microfilter. Drop one end in the water, no matter how bad it looks and the other in a container and start pumping! Katadyn is manufactured by the Swiss, so you know you can depend on excellent Swiss design and engineering. It’s sturdy, easy to clean and will pump about 13,000 gallons before you need to replace the filter.
Plus we have a great demo video (cough, cough, not by RegularJoe) but by Katadyn, the manufacturer. Ok, so their budget was a little higher than we typically spend and it’s missing old campy commercial references and sarcasm… But it’s a good demo of a great product!
We stock a few of the best portable quality water purifiers such as the Katadyn and SteriPen lines. We have other water transport products, replacement filters, etc., as well. Have a look and see why people are saying: “I get my gear at RegularJoeOutdoors.com”!
And have a fantastic day while you’re at it!
